How double optin works

In email marketing there is a new concept that is called double optin.  The idea behind it and how it all came about is well explained in the eBooks you have received with the Optin Quiz Generator. This section is more a reminder of the important elements.

The idea of double optin was created to help ensuring that less and less SPAM is being sent around the internet.  And it works in the following way.

Imagine that you have a newly created website and you heard it is good to capture your visitor’s names and email so to contact them further.

1. The first thing you do is login into your autoresponder service.


2. The second thing you would do is put on your webpage the form Autoresponder gave you.


3. Then you will configure a few details in the autoresponder.  Such options are:


1. In which list to add your subscribers


2. Where to sent them after they gave you their email address/name, we call that page the TYO (Thank You) Page.  On this page you can thank them for being part of your list or ask them to check the confirmation email they receive from you.


3. Where to send them after they confirmed the email address, the Confirmation Page.  This page can be a OTO (One Time Offer), an sell letter or any page for that matter that you sent them to.

Here below is what happens when one visitors comes to your page:

1. Lets say Joe Doe a visitors, arrives at your website.  He likes what you put there and he gives you his name and email address, by filling up your autoresponder form.


2. When he pushes the Submit button the following things will happen:


1. They will be automatically redirected to your TYO page


2. Your autoresponder will send them a confirmation email
3. Joe Doe than goes to his email and see the confirmation email.  In that email there is a link.  When he clicks on the link two things happen:


1. Your autoresponder just realized that the email address is valid and the person had actually confirm it, and that makes it an official double optin subscriber.  So it knows that Joe Doe really wanted to be on your list and from that moment one, he will be a valid record that you are allowed to contact with further messages.


2. Your autoresponder will forward Joe Doe to a page that you have set up as "Confirmation Page".

The description above shows how a typical autoresponder works.  There might be some other exotic systems that have different functionality but the most common ones use the behavior as above.
